WHEN DOES A BOY BECOME A MAN?

Words & Music by
JIM RAINHO

CHILD: "Dad!"
DAD: "What?"
CHILD: "When does a boy become a man. Is it when he's twenty-one?"
DAD: "Age doesn't make a boy a man, my son, age doesn't make a man a man.
I guess....."

First, you have to go through bouts with the measles and the mumps.
Have lots of scraped knees, some scars, and some bumps.
Eat buckets of ice cream, go to the circus, and go to the zoo,
And learn how to say please, may I, and thank you.

Experience the thrill of riding a bike for the very first time,
Search the town for the biggest tree for you to climb.
Go to Sunday School, become a Cub Scout, bring home a stray pup.
Have a crush on a pretty teacher, and feel oh so grown up.

You must experience the excitement of some Christmas joy,
Fly a kite, build a model plane, and cherish a special; toy.
You have to be beaned by a baseball, play hooky and get caught,
And get your first black eye, in a fight that has to be fought.

A newspaper route, a new baseball mitt, pigtails you have to pull,
A Bruins poster, baseball games, and sick days with no school.
Basketball games, report cards, and a week at Boy Scout camp,
Many dreams, and many schemes, planning to be the champ.

Puberty, adolescence, and many growing pains, my son,
All this, and much more, before childhood is done.
|
A first date, a first kiss, borrowing the car,
A prom, and graduation, getting to know who, and what you really are.

Somewhere from the paved school yard to the college campus green,
From a small school room model, to a huge factory machine.
On, from the neighborhood park, to some foreign battle field,
From one of these points to another, manhood will yield.

Be patient son, take your time, while you are a child,
Because you'll be a little boy for such a short, short while.
Be patient son, take your time, having as much fun as you can,
You will someday enter - through a door a child, my son -
and emerge on the other side - a MAN.
